Early Snow is Powdered Gold
A human resources professional in the Mt Washington Valley once told me that snow is a specific topic of conversation addressed in the hiring process. As she put it, “If you don’t wake up on a snowy morning and instantly get excited about the fresh snow, you may want to re-think your relocation…”. When snow falls in late October in the North Conway area the best answer is to embrace it and plan on winter fun until March!
On this snowy November morning, at my home in The White Mountains, I think we may be getting more of a blessing than a curse. The winter seems to have firmly embraced the north country in New England, and North Conway is a pretty darn good place to be when you really like the change of seasons and snow looks like fun. Cross country trails are in good shape. Snowmobile trails are getting groomed early and the local ski resorts are humming before Thanksgiving!
The early start to the ski season has a long-lasting effect on the Mount Washington Valley economy. Early snow builds enthusiasm in the region and brings people back more often. This expands the effect on local businesses as vacationers expand their scope of knowledge and get comfortable exploring.
For many repeat vacationers the appeal of owning local property, either as income property or for their own exclusive use, offers an avenue for real estate investing that doesn’t require millions of dollars. Turning a $200k vacation condo or chalet into a $300k property for under $50k of improvements is very feasible in the Mount Washington Valley. Take a look at properties for sale and see if this would be a good investment for your family legacy.
